Melodeon was purchased by my great-grandfather Perry Mapes after he returned to Ohio from serving in the Civil War. On that basis I assume that it was manufactured ca. 1860. It has been in my family continuously since that time.
Based on photographs of other instruments, appears to be a Kinnard & Dreher, but it carries no identifying information to that effect.
At some point the original wooden dowels used to secure the legs to the frame of the instrument were replaced by threaded steel rods that screw into steel plates mortised into the frame.
The instrument was recently restored to playing condition by Bruce Stevens of Wells River, VT.
Serial number is unknown.
