1865 Mason & Hamlin

The height of this organ is 29.25' the length is approx. 32' the depth is 17.25' the wood appears to be mahogany and perhaps some cherry or even a few pieces of oak. The label underneath the lid reads: 'Mason & Hamlin Automated Bellows Swell, Patented Oct.13, 1857.... Re-issue April 19, 1864 patented Oct, 1862'. Oh, and it does play fabulously! Tone is great. This organ is the portable kind that was used for a graveside service, or outdoor wedding ceremony. It is out of an estate in NC.
Mason & Hamlin organs are among the best, if not THE best. Known for their quailty in workmanship and tone. The reeds for each note are carefully produced brass.

When I was trouble shooting some of the keys, (which all now work), I came across another label under the 'keyboard' which had a date from some time in Aug. 1865. I cannot say that this is THE date of manufacture, but I would not doubt it... The keys are IVORY, a few with very small chips.
One side has a decorative piece as a decorative side brace, the other is missing.
